Chief Financial Officer
William A. Smith serves as the chief financial officer for the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy. He attended Detroit Public Schools through middle school and graduated high school from Detroit Benedictine. Smith is a graduate of Colorado State University with a bachelor's of science degree in accounting and a graduate of Wayne State University with a master's of business administration. He has over 20 years of accounting and finance experience.
After spending more than 10 years in the healthcare industry, William joined the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy in January 2006 as the senior director of finance and administration. After four years of exemplary service, he was promoted to chief financial officer. In his role with the Conservancy, William has managed over $100 million of public space construction along Detroit’s riverfront, which has spearheaded more than $1 billion of economic investment in the riverfront district.
Additionally, he has more than 15 years of entrepreneurial experience in real estate, construction and restaurant retail. Smith is currently the owner and operator of DUO Restaurant & Lounge in Southfield, MI.
In 2009, William was a recipient of Michigan Chronicle’s 2009 “Men of Excellence” Award. He was recognized by Crain’s Detroit Business in 2013 as a finalist for CFO of the Year.
In 2015, he joined fellow leaders by completing the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Leadership Detroit Class XXXVI. Also in 2015, he completed the Urban Land Institute of Michigan’s Larson School for Leadership program. Both programs are designed to cultivate leadership development among professionals from throughout Metro Detroit and the State of Michigan.
William has been a member of the Detroit Athletic Club for more than 17 years. Other memberships include the American Planning Association and Urban Land Institute. He also serves as an Invest Detroit Advisory Committee member and on the boards of the Detroit Youth Sports Commission, Black Family Development and Develop Detroit, Inc.
