In August of 2012 work began on the former Uniroyal tire factory site located directly west of the Belle Isle Bridge. After spending most of the previous century as an industrial site the area had become contaminated and soil reclamation was needed. To ensure a full ecological recovery construction crews are excavating the site in order to replace contaminated dirt with pollutant-free soil and clay.
Once the site has been successfully rehabilitated, it will feature its own expanse of the RiverWalk as well as greenspace and future residential or commercial development.
