Make time for your physical and mental health this winter at Valade Park with free classes on Sundays in January and February from 2  - 3 p.m. Self-Care Sundays is a part of Winter at Valade and will feature a rotating schedule of classes of Polar Power Walks and Self-Care Sunday strolls. Even with the chilly weather, it's a great time to get outside for some winter wellness on the weekends. Who says you can't work out outside in the winter? Join us every weekend at Robert C. Valade Park, located at 2670 Atwater Street. 

Polar Power Walks with Urban Solace will combine movement with light strengthening and stretching activities along the Detroit Riverwalk. You'll be guided through a riverfront walk with stops for fitness breaks along the way. Pre-registration is required at this link:

Registration opens the Monday before the class at noon.

Self-Care Sunday Strolls with ASW Wellness will guide participants through Valade Park and the Riverwalk focusing on breathwork, meditation, and soothing sound healing as you walk. This class is for anyone who wants to incorporate mindfulness and other valuable self care tools into their day while enjoying some fresh air, movement, and community. Registration is strongly encouraged.

Before or after the class, explore Winter at Valade and enjoy hot chocolate, bonfires, s'mores, and other festive winter fun!  

Please note that classes are fully outdoors and will involve walking on potentially snowy surfaces. Please dress accordingly for the weather.  All ages welcome.

Free parking for Winter at Valade is located in the lot at the corner of Chene and Guoin (enter on Guoin). There is additional parking at the Stroh Riverplace Garage and nearby side streets. Please follow all posted parking directional signage and do not park on Atwater Street. Click here for a street and lot parking map.

Other transportation options include:

  • DDOT Jefferson bus #9 to Chene stop. Walk 3 blocks south towards the river and Atwater street.
  • MoGo, Detroit's bike share program, has stations throughout Metro Detroit. Pick up a bike from your nearest station and ride to the Atwater and Joseph Campau station. From there, walk one block west along Atwater to Valade.
  • The Connect shuttle runs a free loop from the Rivertown area to Michigan Central Station in Corktown along Atwater, Jefferson, Fort, and Michigan. Ride to the Atwater or Jos Campou/Wright stop from any station along the route. Learn more here.

Moonlight Yoga takes a unique twist on yoga classes by providing participants with glowing accessories and incorporating glow batons into traditional yoga poses, all with beautiful views of the Detroit River. 

At each session, local yoga instructor Michelle Renaud of Detroit’s Urban Solace will lead participants through a series of traditional yoga poses, accessible for all ages and experience levels. All glow materials will be provided. Participants must bring their own mats* and are encouraged to bring water, bug spray, a towel, and anything else that might make you comfortable at an outdoor class.

*a limited number of mats are available for use on a first come, first served basis

Program cost is $5 and space is limited for each session, so advance registration is required.  Registration will open two weeks before each class. If cost is prohibitive to your participation, please email info@detroitriverfront.org for free registration. If class is cancelled due to inclement weather, the DRFC will work to reschedule or apply registration fee towards a future class. If rescheduling is not possible, your fee will go towards continuing the work of the DRFC. 

Registration will open at noon on the Thursday two weeks before each class.

2024 classes will take place on August 7, 21, and September 4 at 8:30 PM in Gabriel Richard Park, located at 7130 E Jefferson. Please arrive at 8pm to allow enough time to park, walk to the class area, receive your materials, and get settled.

Free parking is available in the lot at Gabriel Richard Park, located at 7130 E Jefferson. Bike parking is available right next to the class area, and MoGo's are available for rent at the base of the Belle Isle bridge. Consider adding a walk, run, or ride along the Riverfront to your evening!

3v3 in the D Free Youth Basketball Tournament

Join the Detroit Parks Coalition for a 3v3 youth basketball tournament from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m at Cullen Plaza.

Presented in partnership with the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy and sponsored by the Detroit Pistons Foundation and the William Davidson Foundation, 3v3 in the D is Detroit’s premier 3v3 youth basketball tournament, celebrating competition, sports and community. Held on August 17th in Detroit, this 3v3 tournament will host more than 300 kids for a day full of basketball and excitement.

3v3 in the D is the culmination of the Pistons Neighbors Program, celebrating a summer of fun and recreation in Detroit’s parks. In addition to the tournament, the Detroit Pistons Foundation will provide an afternoon of family fun including 3 point competitions and skills workshops.

THE DETROIT YOUTH SPORTS SHOWCASE RETURNS TO THE DETROIT RIVERFRONT ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 17, 2024 FROM 11AM-3PM!

The Detroit Youth Sports Showcase is a free opportunity for youth to try out a variety of sports and outdoor physical activities with partners from across the city. Participants will explore stations throughout Cullen Plaza and Milliken State Park including basketball, tennis, soccer, chess, and more, as well as group fitness classes and demonstrations. Drop in anytime between 11am and 3pm!

All ages and experience levels are welcome. Participants are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle to fill up on-site and wear athletic apparel and closed toed shoes. Free parking is available in the River East Garage at 1000 Franklin Street, Detroit MI 48207. Food will be available for purchase on-site.

Participants can receive free Detroit Tigers tickets while supplies last, alongside other giveaways and back to school resources.
