Reading & Rhythm on the Riverfront (R3) is the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy’s unique, interactive early literacy program that provides children from southeast Michigan an opportunity to see live children’s entertainment, hear a story read by a local community leader and receive a free book, as well as a ride on the lovely Cullen Family Carousel. 

For families and groups under 10, the program is first come, first served. Groups of over 10 children must pre-register.

The R3 program presented by the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy, with support from General Motors, stretches six weeks throughout the summer and features readings by local celebrities, as well as business and community leaders.  The program also boasts live and interactive family entertainment, healthy treats, free rides on the Cullen Family Carousel and free books provided by General Motors in partnership with the Detroit Public Library’s “Library on Wheels.”

In the summer of 2016, the sixth year of the program, nearly 3,700 children and their families enjoyed R3 and more than 3,800 free books were distributed to children from across southeastern Michigan. In addition to the books distributed, the program also featured a special family lending library with more than 200 selections that children and their families could check out and read along the riverfront during their visit. 

The Conservancy thanks General Motors for the financial support for this program and for helping share the joy of reading with children and families in the community.

The 2018 program will run July 5 - August 10, with sessions taking place on Thursdays and Fridays at 11 AM, 12:00 PM, and 1:15 PM. Each session lasts for 45 minutes. Participants must participate in the session to receive a free book and carousel ride.

Get your back to school jitters out by joining us for an evening of family fit fun with instructor Teena Cathey. On August 29th at Mt. Elliott Park from 8-9PM, fitness instructor Teena Cathey will lead families through a fun fit camp featuring glow jewelry and batons will be incorporated into this family-friendly workout. 
The event fee is $5 for an individual adult, $3 for an individual child, and $10 for a family of four (two adults and two children) to cover equipment cost and other associated costs, and space is limited to 40 registrants for the session, so advance registration is required.  If a participant cannot cover the cost, a few scholarships are available by contacting info@detroitriverfront.org.

Celebrate summer along the beautiful Detroit Riverfront with the second annual Riverfront Relaxin' entertainment series presented by the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy and in conjunction with Park Solutions. Riverfront Relaxin' is a FREE five-night series, starting July 13 through August 17, featuring live music, food trucks, vendors and culminating with classic movies under the stars at West Riverfront Park located at 1801 W. Jefferson. Music kicks off at 6:30 and movies being at 8:30 pm, so bring your lawnchairs and blankets and head down to West Riverfront Park for riverfront relaxin'.
