Summer Of Programming And Special Events Continues
Thursday, June 30, 2016
June 30, 2016 [DETROIT]— Warm weather typically brings some of the most diverse and eclectic mix of special events and programming along the Detroit Riverfront all year, and judging by the crowds enjoying all the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy has to offer, this summer is no exception.
So far this summer season, the Conservancy has hosted two rain barrel workshops, Touch-A-Truck, the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Riverfront Run, Kids Fishing Fest, Light Up the Riverfront, Shimmer on the River, GM River Days and a special fireworks celebration along the West Riverfront for Detroit students.
No need to worry because there are many more opportunities to spend some time along the Detroit Riverfront before the weather turns colder.
Reading & Rhythm on the Riverfront, the Conservancy’s literacy-based family-friendly program made possible by the General Motors Foundation, makes its return for the sixth year on Thursdays and Fridays from July 7 to August 12. Last year, the program served nearly 4,000 children and their families, who were treated to special celebrity readings, musical entertainment, arts and crafts, healthy snacks, carousel rides and free books to enjoy throughout the summer.
Through a partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, the popular Moonlight Yoga is back with sessions on July 20, August 3 and August 24. Participants in the sessions are provided neon glow jewelry and lighted batons to use during traditional and non-traditional yoga poses. Free yoga and T’ai Chi classes are offered during the week as well.
Riviere28’s fun and funky "Soiree on the Greenway" along the Dequindre Cut will provide guests with live entertainment, food trucks and other surprises on August 18.
Plans are also underway for a celebration of Mexican heritage at West Riverfront Park on August 27.
Additionally, the Conservancy’s neighbors along the riverfront offer a variety of fun things to do, too, like General Motors’ Rockin’ on the Riverfront, GMRenCen on the Plaza, Chene Park concerts and Roberts Riverwalk Hotel jazz performances to name just a few.
