First Fridays at the Freight - Motor City Singers Space Unplugged: Boa Me Begins

Friday, Jul 01, 2022 - 6:00pm to 8:00pm
Event Type : Concerts

Motor City Singers' Space Unplugged: Boa Me Begins is the kickoff celebration concert for a 5 month community song writing project produced by Detroit native culture creator Ben Will and Motor City Sings, a 501©3 nonprofit organization that utilizes music to remove stigma from conversations of mental health and suicide prevention within the Black/African American community of Detroit.

On Friday, July 1, Motor City Sings will return to their first in person event in nearly 2 years featuring acoustic musical performances by several Motor City Singers’ Space favorite artists and special guests. This event will also feature the infamous Motor City Sings audience interaction and provide details on how musical artists, producers, and community members can both volunteer and apply for paid positions to be involved with this important community musical mental health initiative.

“Boa Me” is an abbreviation of the West African adinkra symbol BOA ME NA ME MMOA WO, which translates to English as “Help Me, and Let Me Help You”. The symbol encompasses the principles of healthy interdependence, connection, and healing. The overall goal of this project is to help Detroiters, (and specifically Black Detroiters) reconnect and create agency while developing new music that encompasses the shared sentiments, stories, and emotions of surviving a global pandemic.

The concert is scheduled to occur on Friday, July 1, from 6-8 PM in the Dequindre Cut Freight Yard at Dequindre Cut Greenway, Detroit, MI 48207. Parking is available in the lot at Wilkins and Orleans. Pre-registration is required at the link below.

This event is part of the First Fridays at the Freight series at the Dequindre Cut. Join us on the first Friday of every month for special programming at the Dequindre Cut Freight Yard!
