Black Bottom Street View Exhibit on the Dequindre Cut

Jun 19, 2023 - 12:00am to Jul 16, 2023 - 11:45pm

We are saddened to report that the outdoor Black Bottom Street View Exhibit sustained weather damage over the weekend and must be removed from the Dequindre Cut. Many of the elements in the exhibit were damaged beyond immediate repair, which prevents reinstallation in a timely manner. We have every intention of bringing this wonderful exhibit back to the Dequindre Cut sometime in the future. Stay tuned.

The two programs currently scheduled, Poems on Place: Writing Workshop & Open Mic and the Black Bottom Walking Tour with Jamon Jordan, will still take place on their scheduled dates.

For those who were not able to visit the exhibit and want to learn more, visit https://www.blackbottomstreetview.com/

The Black Bottom Street View exhibit comes outdoors for the first time, debuting on June 19 along the Dequindre Cut!

Black Bottom Street View is a project to visualize and help preserve the history of Detroit’s historic Black Bottom neighborhood. The Burton Historic Collection at the Detroit Public Library has a collection of photographs of every house in a large area of Detroit's Black Bottom neighborhood. The photos were taken from 1949 – 1950 by the City of Detroit as part of the eminent domain process and they show a snapshot of life in Black Bottom right before it was demolished. The Black Bottom Street View exhibit maps the Burton's photographs as panoramic images with over 2,000 photos, so that visitors can explore the neighborhood as it was.

The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy is proud to sponsor the newly refabricated exhibit which will be on view from June 19-July 16. Visitors can view the exhibit daily from 6am-10pm for free by entering the Dequindre Cut at Lafayette and St. Aubin.
