As transitional CEO, Mark A. Burton is charged with implementing and executing MEDC’s core mission of advocating for business development, job awareness and community development with the focus of building a strong and vibrant Michigan economy. Burton is approved to serve in this capacity for an initial seven-month term as a nationwide search is conducted to select a permanent CEO.
Burton is one of Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s longest-serving and most trusted advisors serving as her Chief Strategist, playing an instrumental role in shaping her agenda to close the skills gap, provide every Michigander with a path to a good paying job and to improve the state’s core infrastructure. His background also includes various positions within the state Legislature and the Department of Transportation.
Outside of state government, Burton worked with the W. K. Kellogg Foundation; founded and led a management consulting and communications firm; and served as Executive Director of the Tri-County Alliance for Public Education, which represents the interests of school districts in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties.
Burton received his Bachelor of Science from Northern Michigan University, his Juris Doctor from Michigan State University College of Law, and is a graduate of Oxford University’s International Human Rights Law program.
