The Detroit RiverFront Conservancy

Foundations

Foundation Philanthropy and the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy

Many foundations in Michigan, both large and small, have generously supported the Conservancy throughout its long history, starting with a Kresge Foundation Challenge Grant in 2003. Grants from many charitable, private and public foundations have been the cornerstone of the Conservancy's success over the years.

Founded in 2003, the Conservancy is a private, nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization. Its mission is the development of access on the Detroit International Riverfront. The plan is to create a planned 5 ½ miles of public waterfront linked by a continuous RiverWalk with parks, plazas and green spaces from the Ambassador Bridge to Gabriel Richard Park, just east of the Belle Isle/MacArthur Bridge. Once completed, the Conservancy is responsible for the improvement, operations, maintenance and programming of the riverfront in perpetuity.

As the Conservancy moves into the next critical stage of its growth, the continuation of solid foundation support will be essential if we are to become a premiere international waterfront destination.

What Can You Do?

We invite you to work with us on the Conservancy's long-range plan and our mission-based objectives for education, conservation, guest services and capital improvements, and how your foundation can become a partner. We would enjoy discussing the Conservancy's many programs and projects with you in greater detail.

A site visit is the best way to discover more about the long-term vision for the RiverWalk, and to learn about the dramatic impact that the Conservancy is already making in Detroit everyday.
