Maurice Staten

Board member, Detroit RiverFront Conservancy
Assistant Director, UAW GM - Center for Human Resources.

Maurice Staten joined UAW, Local Union 735 in 1978 after being hired at General Motors, Hydra-Matics (Powertrain) in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

He worked as a Toolmaker and later became an Electrical Journeyman in 1985.

 In 1994, then UAW President Owen Bieber appointed him to be an International Union staff member.  Since then he has worked in Ergonomics, Health and Safety, Training and Quality Network.  He has been privileged and honored to work with UAW President Dennis Williams, under the direction of UAW Vice President and Director, Cynthia Estrada, as the Assistant Director of National Work/Family, Diversity and Special Projects.

Maurice also holds a Master Electrician and Electrical Contractors License with the State of Michigan – Department of Labor & Economic Growth.  He is a General Contractor, licensed with the State of Michigan as well.

During the years, he has had the privilege to be a part of many community service events which include:

  • Boys and Girls Club

  • North End Youth Improvement Council

  • Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program (DAPCEP)

  • Ordained as a Deacon by Bishop, Charles H. Ellis, III the current pastor of Greater Grace Temple in Detroit, Michigan

  • Also received the “Salute to Detroit Finest – Spirit of Detroit” award

  • Lifetime member of NAACP

  • Children’s Defense Fund – Freedom Schools

  • Co-Chair of 2015 American Heart Association – Heart Walk

Maurice received a degree in Electronics from R.E.T.S. Electronics School – Detroit, MI in 1980.  He later studied Residential and Industrial Electricity at Henry Ford Community College – 1981 to 1983.  He also studied Human Factors Engineering and Occupational Ergonomics at University of Michigan – 1987and 1988.

Maurice has been married to his beautiful bride Patricia for 33 years and together they have four beautiful children and two grandsons.
