Shimmer 2012 - Photo Collection

More than 600 guests at this year's Shimmer on the River, the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy's annual fundraiser gala, experienced nature's elements - Earth, Water, Fire and Air - like never before during an evening that featured breathtaking décor, extraordinary entertainment and exquisite eats.

In addition to serving as a significant fundraiser for the Conservancy, Shimmer also provides the nonprofit with an opportunity each year to honor one of its many generous supporters. During this year's event, Detroit business icon and well-known philanthropist Peter Karmanos, Jr. was presented with the Shimmer Award in salute to his many contributions to the community, as well as to the continued revitalization of the riverfront.

The September 5 event saw Detroit's legendary Roostertail completely transformed into a dynamic, engaging environment that marveled the senses. Unique design elements such as tree-lined forest pathways featuring woodland creatures, a human water fountain and dramatic red and orange color schemes created a sense of intrigue, adventure and whimsy for guests at every turn.

An eclectic menu embraced the evening's theme and provided guests with dishes such as shrimp shooters, a mashed, garlic and sweet potato bar, sliced tenderloin, beef and chicken kabobs, mini mac and cheese and a marshmallow bar with caramel, butterscotch and peanut butter fondue.

Co-chaired by Conservancy Board member Sandy Pierce and her husband Tom Pierce, Shimmer's entertainment offerings were equally magnificent. Award-winning and Detroit favorite Thornetta Davis transfixed the crowd with a set that had the venue pulsating with energy and excitement. Following Thornetta's performance, DJ Jared Sykes provided the beats that kept guests moving and ensured that no one was going home early.

The funds will help the Conservancy with costs associated with construction and the perpetual operations, maintenance, security and programming of the Detroit Riverfront and the Dequindre Cut Greenway.
